Fleming will make a wonderful Black Caps coach: Vettori – Yahoo! India News

Wellington, Oct 25 (ANI): New Zealand's captain and de facto coach Daniel Vettori believes former skipper Stephen Fleming would make a wonderful Black Caps coach.

Vettori will lead the team to the United Arab Emirates for a one-day and Twenty20 series against Pakistan as both captain and coach following Andy Moles' decision on Saturday to step down as coach after a review process revealed he was ill-equipped to continue in the role.

With Moles not stepping up to the mark, Vettori has been effectively coaching the team for the past six months,

The Sunday Star-Times quoted Vettori as saying that he was happy to continue as player-coach for the next few months, including the home test series against Pakistan next month, but after that he would prefer to see someone come into the role.

“Stephen and I keep in regular contact and he's been quite a big help in going through all this stuff and some other things that have gone on. He has concerns about my workload and he wants to be a sounding board and do anything he can to help,” Vettori said.

“He's definitely got coach written all over him and he could be an extremely successful one; it's just whether he wants to get back into that life of touring the world and in that regard it probably is too soon for him. But he would make a wonderful coach,” he added.

New Zealand Cricket chief executive Justin Vaughan, when asked if Fleming was a coach candidate, said: “I don't think this is the right time.”

In the short-term manager Dave Currie will have his leadership responsibilities upgraded to help Vettori, while current assistant coach Mark O'Donnell will remain with the team, stuff.co.nz reports. (ANI)

BERLIN, Oct 24 (Reuters) – VfB Stuttgart coach Markus Babbel will be in charge against Greuther Fuerth in the German Cup next week despite a 1-0 defeat by Hanover on Saturday which left them 14th in the league, the club said.

It was Stuttgart’s third league defeat in a row.

“There is no discussion about the coach,” Stuttgart sports director Horst Heldt told reporters. “Markus will be sitting on the bench on Tuesday.”

Rookie coach Babbel, in his first full season in charge while studying for his coaching licence, took over last year and steered them to a third-place finish and Champions League spot.

But this season, with top striker Mario Gomez joining Bayern, Stuttgart have been disappointing, collecting only eight points from 10 games.

They are also third in their Champions League group with two points from three matches after a 3-1 home defeat by Sevilla on Tuesday. (Writing by Karolos Grohmann; Editing by Ed Osmond)

Vettori ducks under coach Moles controversy bouncer – Yahoo! India News

Auckland, Oct 23(ANI): Playing down the controversy over Coach Andy Moles's role in the New Zealand cricket team, skipper Daniel Vettori has said the there is no point raising questions over the coach before a crucial series.

When asked if he would be happy for Moles to continue, Vettori said: “I think we have to be. There's no point me making statements to the contrary. I think we have to prepare to take a team away and get the best out of them.”

“Andy and I have a good working relationship, but whether that's enough to make the team better is the question that's been asked. Our relationship stands strong in what we need to do. Andy and I are at the helm and until we know anything different that's the status quo,” Stuff.co.nz quoted Vettori, as saying.

The controversy was sparked after reports claimed that the Kiwi players were dismissive of the 48-year-old's abilities during the tour of Sri Lanka and South Africa.

However, Vettori said that the statements made by players were taken out of context, which fired the rumours.

“Whenever players are asked honest questions about anything they give their answers. I think guys have voiced ways of making the team better. Part of that is my captaincy, part of it is players fronting up and a part of it is Andy improving as well. We just want the best for the team,” he said.

Vettori further admitted that the team has been facing difficult days over the past few months.

“It's been a tough day for a number of people involved and hopefully everyone can deal with it in the best possible manner. I think Andy understands this is part of cricketing life,” Vettori said. Guys are always looking for ways to improve and you constantly go through a review process,” he added.

Moles was appointed as New Zealand coach after John Bracewell stepped down in November last year and his runs through to the 2011 World Cup. (ANI)

Suspect in UConn stabbing pleads not guilty – Yahoo! News

HARTFORD, Conn. – A man accused of stabbing a University of Connecticut football player to death in October has pleaded not guilty to murder.

Defense attorney Deron Freeman says his client, John Lomax III, entered the not guilty plea Wednesday in Rockville Superior Court and waived his right to a probable cause hearing that had been scheduled for Thursday.

Lomax is charged with stabbing UConn cornerback Jasper Howard during an Oct. 18 fight outside a school-sanctioned dance.

Freeman says he doesn’t believe the state has the evidence to show Lomax stabbed anyone. But he says the threshold to bring the charges is so low that this week’s hearing would have amounted to a “rubber stamp.”

Freeman says he is not involved in any plea negotiations with the state and expects the case to go to trial.

As she prepares for radical surgery, swimmer Dara Torres isn’t giving up on another Olympics – Yahoo! Canada News

Module body

Mon Oct 19, 8:34 AM

By Paul Newberry, The Associated Press

Dara Torres has downloaded a bunch of movies and piled up all sorts of books, anything to pass the time over the next few months.

She won’t be racing anyone in the pool for a while – or doing much of anything else, for that matter. Another Olympics? No one really knows.

The 42-year-old Torres is heading to Boston for the most daunting challenge of her long swimming career Tuesday, a radical surgery that involves cutting her left shin, adjusting it to a new position under the kneecap and inserting cartilage that will take up to a year to fully develop.

“Just thinking about it,” said her coach, Michael Lohberg, “makes me about want to faint.”

Torres isn’t exactly thrilled about undergoing such a major operation, but she figures it’s the only chance to have what is a normal life for her: being active, working out, keeping herself in top physical condition. The swimming part is almost secondary, though she hasn’t ruled out trying to compete in a record sixth Olympics – at age 45!

My, what a comeback story that would be.

“I want to have that choice a year from now,” Torres said. “I want to be able to say, ‘Yes, I want to go for this’ or, ‘No, I don’t want to.’ But I want it to be my choice, not because of my knee.”

While confident in her decision to have what is known in medical parlance as a tibial tubercle osteotomy, Torres was understandably worried as she counted down the days to such a major operation.

“I’m on edge a little bit,” she told The Associated Press over the weekend when reached by telephone at a swim clinic in New Jersey, where she wasn’t able to fully demonstrate what she was teaching. “I’m glad to be getting this over with, but I have no idea how the recovery is going to go. It’s sort of an unknown. I don’t know how my body will react.

“We’ll just have to wait and see,” she added. “It’s a long road to recovery. That’s sort of hard for me. I like answers right away. I want to know what’s going on.”

The full recovery period could drag on as long as 18 months, which poses the biggest challenge to Torres. She’s spent her entire life in go-go-go mode, and now she’ll have no choice except to slow down if she wants to have the best shot at coming all the way back, to actually get a shot at swimming in the 2012 London Games.

Lohberg said he’s not as concerned about Torres swimming again as he is about her being able to resume her regular routine. At the moment, just walking around is painful, and getting up and down stairs is agonizing.

“The thing is, she is totally a fitness freak,” the coach said. “She loves to be fit like other people like coffee or a smoke, whatever. It’s like an addiction for her, a fitness addiction. She needs to be able to use her body to its fullest.”

Torres has already come back twice from supposed retirements, and there’s certainly nothing left to prove after she won three silver medals at age 41 in Beijing. But one gets the feeling she knows this would be her greatest accomplishment – if she can actually pull it off.

“From a short period of time that I have met and gotten to know Dara, it is clear to me that she is one of the most fiercely competitive and ‘winningest’ persons I have ever met, with a tremendous work ethic,” Dr. Tom Minas, who will perform Tuesday’s operation, wrote in an e-mail to the AP. “I would be very wary if I were her competition.”

After the surgery, Torres will recuperate in Boston for three to five days, then she’ll spend six weeks on crutches. Her only physical activity over the next month will be monitored by a CPM (continuous passive motion) machine, which she’ll be attached to for several hours each day. She can start riding an exercise bike after four to six weeks, but she must be careful not to overdo it for nine to 12 months while the new cartilage is growing into a firm, hard tissue – a necessary step if she wants to be rid of the pain she began experiencing after her arthritic knee wiped out all the cartilage that had been there, basically leaving her with one bone rubbing against another.

Minas said a less-radical arthroscopic procedure has already been attempted and would do no good at this point.

“She experiences a painful grinding sensation accompanied by swelling in the joint and ongoing inflammation whenever she attempts to be active,” he wrote. “Aside from her swimming, her quality of life with day-to-day activities is painful and limited whenever she tries to become more active to stay fit.”

True to her Type A personality, Torres has furiously been setting her life in order, from cleaning her home in Florida to preparing young daughter Tessa for a mother who won’t be able to hold her like she does now, at least for a while. The reading list includes Jon Krakauer’s new book about Pat Tillman, the late Ted Kennedy’s memoir and the novel “American Adulterer.” She’s also got the sixth season of “Entourage” and a bunch of movies ready to punch up, from the latest James Bond flick to “The Manchurian Candidate.”

“I went nuts on DVDs,” she joked.

But no matter how many books she reads or movies she watches, nothing will replace the thrill of gliding through the water, or going on an early morning bike ride.

“At some point, she will freak out,” Lohberg said, breaking into a hearty chuckle. “This is going to be a new experience for her. This is a new dimension to her life that she hasn’t seen yet. This is so totally against what she is, really. But sometimes, you do what you’ve got to do and you learn new lessons.”

The coach has dealt with this himself, waging a daily fight over the past year with a rare, life-threatening blood disorder. Seeing what Lohberg has gone through will surely provide Torres with some necessary perspective when she’s feeling sorry for herself or just going stir-crazy, which will inevitably happen during the long road to recovery.

“The good thing about her situation is at some point, there really is a light at the end of the tunnel,” Lohberg said.

So, does he think Torres will make it all the way back? If they put odds on these sort of things, would he be willing to place a bet on her swimming in London in three years?

“It may be a long shot,” Lohberg said, without hesitation, “but I would put my money on Dara.”

If you have been searching the internet for something, you will usually end up with a life coach site popping up in your results at some point. Life Coaching has evolved over the years and continues to change and grow – but what is life coaching, how do you choose a life coach, and what should you be aware of?

Life Coaching Past:

Life Coaching really emerged, noticeably, about 10 years ago. Most life coaching was advertised as Executive Coaching or Leadership Coaching and they were usually hired by corporations for staff or individual training. With the onset of in-house corporate training teams, the need for Executive Coaches diminished and many sought other areas to continue coaching in. Since then, there are now life coaches that coach in every area of life you can think of and then some. Many life coaches specialize in one or two main life areas but many still coach in multiple life areas. Originally, life coaches were people who had some kind of previous work experience before going into coaching. Most Executive Coaches came out of the corporate business world and as an Executive Coach or Leadership Coach, were able to make great incomes. Many of these past Executive Coaches also have become Client Attraction or Marketing Coaches in today’s climate and their services are provided to corporations still but mostly to small or solo businesses or individuals.

Life Coaching Now:

Now life coaching is common, easy to find and is for businesses and individuals and can be called just about anything. Today, there are many life coach training schools but there are huge disparities between the qualities of education students receive from school to school. In fact, there are no required educational standards that a life coach school must follow/provide and there is no regulation of the life coach industry. Anyone can call themselves a Life Coach and open a practice – buyer beware becomes a very serious phrase to remember. There are now a couple of professional organizations, such as the International Coaching Federation, which as a professional membership organization, is working diligently to establish coaching standards, life coach school standards and looking at types of regulations that could benefit the industry and consumers.

There are now between 10,000 and 20,000 life coaches that are providing services to customers. There are an increasing number of people pursuing becoming a life coach. Many people want to help others but many think they can earn a tremendous amount of money while being able to work at home in their pjs, part-time. If only it was that easy. Today’s world of having a web based business and all it entails has become very complicated and it isn’t as cheap in start-up costs either. Most life coaches are earning much less than $20,000 a year because they don’t have enough clients. Many coaches fail because you have to be a person who can structure their own time while working from home. When you work in a business, it provides structure that you work within. At home, there is no structure except what a person creates and it is all too easy to not be structured. Marketing has become a huge part of daily life for life coaches, much more than ever before and many have taken marketing to an incredible level of hard selling. Those ‘coaches’ providing marketing or small business start-up coaching have created a huge income based industry but it has also gained tremendous competition over the last few years.

Niche Is In:

Niche in life coaching is the current theme – this means that a life coach ‘specializes’ in one or a few areas only. There are many life coaches though who still would be considered general life coaches and offer a much broader range of coaching services. The market is pushing life coaches to have specific niche’s quite hard and explain that the public prefers ‘specialists’ and are willing to pay more for them. It is rather like the medical profession, you have generalists, generalists with a smaller focus, specialists with a broad focus and specialists with very specific focus topics. So, everyone entering coaching is told to have a niche; it could be life coaching, client attraction, marketing, public relations, Christian, organization, health, financial and many, many more areas that ‘coaching’ is being offered in.

Buyer Beware:

Throughout my research, I was totally amazed at how few life coaches will post their prices but also, and perhaps even more importantly, they do not post their educational or work experience! I don’t know about you, but I’m not really interested in sharing my dreams and goals with someone unless they are qualified and that means having work, life and educational experience in their ‘niche’ or coaching areas. I’ve asked many other coaches, and some of them are very well known and successful, and been told that education and experience are not important! So, I guess from that, if someone worked at the local animal shelter and didn’t graduate from high school, they are just as well qualified to provide life coaching services as everyone else. NOT in my book. We check out loads of information before we buy a car, before we choose a doctor, and even before we purchase a mattress. Why wouldn’t it mean something about what education and work/life experiences a life coach has? So, buyer beware!

Marketing and using psychology to sell whether on the web or in ‘real’ life, is something every business uses. Unfortunately, the web is unregulated and you cannot check things out and be secure that the information you get is honest and truthful. There is no Consumer Reports or Better Business Bureau for the Internet. The science of selling is intense and is geared at: getting visitors to give e-mail address for a ‘free’ gift so they have you in the mailing data base; use words and colors to attract you and make you ‘trust’ them, offer free material to read and low priced items and then you’ll receive e-mails about tele-seminars, videos, guest speakers, and high cost products/memberships/mentorships and mastermind groups. Many coaches are genuine but how do you tell the difference without making many painful, expensive and time consuming mistakes. Also read the fine print, many web businesses do not have guarantees or refunds available. Look for coaches who belong to national organizations, who post their credentials (experience and education), and did they graduate from a life coaching or coaching program or school? You can’t trust testimonials often, due to a business may have provided services to hundreds but you will only see the few who wrote glowing testimonials, a site that has ratings on it is great but can be doctored, asking to speak to a former client is the best method of checking out a particular coach business, even many former clients is better. I hope there will be some type of review system devised someday, as in your community word gets around quickly about a company, but on the internet you don’t have that check and balance system available. So, buyer beware!

Why people should try Life Coaching:

Life Coaching is an awesome way for people to stay motivated, keep their focus, gain self-insights and strive to achieve their goals. Life Coaching deals with the here and now and goes forward from there, it is an action based co-active coaching style that is not like therapy which deals with past life events and more psychological issues. A life coach should have the educational/work/life experiences and tools necessary to meet the needs of their customers and if not, then say so and refer the customer to a life coach that does. I recently tried to get a referral network started at the life coach school I attended, so that I and others would know where to refer a customer if I felt their needs could be better met by another. Only two other coaches felt secure enough to put their strengths out there – no one else!

In today’s busy, fast-paced world, it is often filled with stress, little personal support and difficult to achieve your goals or solve problems. Life Coaching is a great means to help a person with achieving their goals, solving problems, getting the support they need so that life is less difficult and overall, improved.

What to look for in a Coach:

Tips for you, as a customer in choosing a life coach include: know ahead of time what you want to achieve with a life coach and be able to answer how a coach can best work with you and you with them. It is also helpful to have an idea on how long you are willing to be in coaching before you expect to achieve your results and how much you can afford; research different life coach websites and read their articles, newsletters and check out their education/work/life experience and training; interview 3 different coaches – include in the interview all your questions on experience, prices, examples of accomplishments related to your goal, how long do they think it would take to achieve your goal, explain how you prefer to work with a coach and ask what their style of coaching is; ask for two references that had goals similar to yours; and most importantly, make sure the life coach you choose is one that you ‘connect’ with or that ‘feels right’ to you. Other possible questions can be asking what the life coach feels are their strengths and weaknesses. Also be cautious if you get the impression that the life coach may end up ‘telling you what to do’ or pressuring you into goals or avenues that you do not want and they seem more the agenda of the coach than yours.

Life Coaching is supposed to be about the customer and what they want to achieve and their style of learning/growing/achieving through the process of reaching their goals. It is not about the life coach. In fact, every life coach’s goal should be to put themselves out of business. If coaching were done well, then eventually, fewer people would need it. As the saying goes, ‘teach them to fish rather than feeding them fish and they will never go hungry’. Costs for life coaching services can typically run $300-$600 a month and some will go to $300 or more an hour. Some coaches actually earn $18,000 hour. If the life coaches you check-out don’t publish their costs, ask.

What is the future of Life Coaching?

Where is Life Coaching going in the future? While the economy and the increasing stress of everyday life is severely hurting the quality of people’s lives, life coaching will continue to grow in the number of people it serves as well as the number of life coaches entering the field. The number of people utilizing the web and becoming web based businesses will continue to increase the number of coaches who provide marketing, client attraction and who start business types of services.

One of the newer life coaching waves coming is ‘Wellness Coaching’ which is similar to health coaching. Of concern to me is that many, who are entering this ‘niche’, receive only 20 hrs of training. Many life coaches practicing health or wellness coaching have not checked their state’s laws on what they can and cannot coach on in this ‘niche’. A life coach cannot treat, diagnose, cure, prescribe or provide counseling. As a Holistic Practitioner, Certified Life Coach and Licensed Social Worker, I fear for people receiving life coaching services on health related subjects from life coaches with so little background in health and thus the potential for harm of the customer may occur. This is my concern and opinion which is shared by some and not by others. The pressure for more specific specialization, ‘niching’, will likely increase as well.

Will social media change the face of coaching? That’s unknown at this time. There are many blogs and forums now that people can access for support for their specific needs, meet and get to know other people interested in the same things. The world has gotten smaller and it is much easier to find people to talk to on the web, yet we are more isolated in our ‘real’ lives than ever before.

I envision the complexities of marketing, which include free give aways, membership groups, increased administrative time (which means less time for coaching), hard selling and heavy marketing will continue to increase, as well. I envision there will be expanded Coaching Schools that provide coaching education that gives core basics for all types of coaching and then gives additional education in specific areas of specialty types of coaching. These will greatly lead to better qualified service providers. I found it amazing, how many coaches actually came out of the computer field from computer programming, IT support, web design and such. I do hope that something can be done to make sure the competency, skill, education, and experience of life coaches becomes more uniform and is not as much a ‘shooting in a barrel’ experience for customers to find truly skilled and dedicated coaches.

In conclusion, life coaching has gone from corporate America to mainstream. The benefits of life coaching are becoming better known and there are many gifted life coaches available – but you will have to do some weeding first. Life Coaching can improve the quality of your life and even your physical and mental health and thus, it is hoped, it may be covered by health insurance as pro-active services someday. In the mean time, life coaching is affordable and easy to find. If you are in search of life coaching for a very specific area of your life or goal, there is likely a life coach that covers it. But the bottom line is that it is up to the consumer to pick the ‘right’ life coach for them and if it doesn’t work for you, then stop and switch to a life coach that will ‘fit’ you better. Life coaching has evolved considerably and will continue to do so and in 6 years, we’ll write another article updating you on how things have, yet again, changed.

Mental health professionals have a wealth of valuable, even crucial, information and expertise in which many people are in need.

One-on-one therapy is only one way we can deliver this expertise and help.

There are a number of possible ways therapists can create revenue streams while sharing their talents, expertise and skills with people in need.

Some of these ways are traditional and common, but others are rather innovative ways therapists are beginning to put their abilities to good use. In doing so, they are creating revenue streams.

Traditional Services

Although its time for therapists to think out of the box and develop new services that creatively meet the felt needs of niche markets, there is a place for the traditional therapeutic services.

These include psychotherapy for the DSM diagnoses, psychological testing and evaluation, marriage and family therapy and behavioral health care.

And, yes, people will forgo managed-care reimbursement and pay out of pocket for services that are of higher value because they are higher quality, offer real privacy and are truly customized for the individual needs.

One of the frustrations I hear from mental health care service consumers is that they can’t find a specialized therapist in their managed-care insurance network.

It’s as if managed care’s philosophy is, “We’ll help you obtain access to psychotherapy, but we don’t care whether the therapist we connect you with is a specialist. A generalist is fine.”

Set yourself apart and demonstrate your true value in the marketplace through specialization. Many people in the market for therapy value specialization.

Getting Published

A book is a powerful way to affect lives. It is also a good way to establish credibility, highlight your practice and services and position yourself in your niche.

And, it’s easier than you think if you self-publish. It has become very affordable to do so, and it puts you in charge of the content, price and reprints.

It can actually be more profitable, too. You keep every dollar above your costs. If you went through a major publisher who sells a few thousand books, you would only receive the author’s fee. You can make as much selling a few hundred copies of a self-published book yourself.

If your book is successful, you may even attract a large publisher to take over your book.

Writing a book opens doors to speaking engagements, media opportunities and a reputation in your niche market.

It also helps you to crystallize your thinking and enhances your effectiveness as a practitioner; it’s a great exercise in that sense. You will learn a lot both in breadth and depth.

Take the opportunity now to brainstorm ideas for a book that’s inside you.

It doesn’t have to be long. One hundred pages is plenty.

Teaching

Teaching courses part-time at a local college or university can be an attractive stream of income.

I have been teaching as adjunct faculty in the Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) program at Widener University outside Philadelphia for several years and find it both rewarding and enjoyable.

Think about areas of special interest on which you could teach a course. Courses that adjunct faculty teach can be core curriculum in a graduate program, an undergraduate course or an elective.

I find that part-time professors who are practioners have a lot to offer because they are immersed in what they teach. Students seem to appreciate this as well.

E-books

E-books are another medium in which you can package and share specialized information.

And e-book is a written piece of information that is distributed via the internet electronically. It is offered free or for a cost (typically $10 to $30) on a web site.

You can also submit an e-book to web sites that list hundreds of e-books to make them available to the public.

Tens of thousands of e-books are downloaded each year, and are changing lives for the better.

Perhaps you can make yours one of them.

Do you have a solution to a specific problem or can you research the answers?

The best e-books share answers to a specific problem.

E-book topics I have heard of recently include: how to write a eulogy, how to cope with a hysterectomy and the topic of recovering from fibromyalgia.

These are e-books written by non-mental health professionals. Imagine what information psychotherapists can offer in this just-in-time format.

E-books cost very little to produce and nothing to distribute. You can attach the file for an e-book to an email or make it downloadable from a web site.

A great e-book is not long. Many of the best are 10 to 35 pages long.

E-books offer short answers to problems readers want to solve, and are available to people quickly.

Good e-books are specific and do not contain general information. The key to marketability is communicating your precise answer to a specific problem.

E-Courses

E-Courses are similar to e-books, but they may be lengthier and delivered to readers one segment at a time. As the name implies, these can be formatted as guided self-study programs.

E-courses allow for the content to be integrated over a specific period of time. Each lesson can be a simple article or more in-depth with guided self-study. Write between five and 10 lessons, and you have a good e-course.

Written by a professional, a good e-course can bridge the gap between a reader learning new information and the reader applying that information to his/her life and making a behavioral change.

Personal Coaching

In sports, coaching is important to help an athlete develop a winning strategy, develop skills and execute the plan. The coach knows how the athlete can progress and move forward. He/she urges the athlete to set high goals and provides motivation, support, focus and encouragement.

Over the past 10 years, the field of professional coaching in personal development and business arenas has grown tremendously.

What is coaching? Personal coaching is a one-on-one professional relationship in which a client is assisted in achieving a personal, business or career goal.

What is the difference between coaching and therapy? Although coaches sometimes assist people with challenges and problems of various kinds, they do not try to help people overcome problems related to diagnosable conditions as found in the DSM.

Rather, coaches assist well-functioning people to attain greater levels of achievement and satisfaction in their personal lives, businesses or careers.

While therapy is remedial and restorative, coaching is developmental and growth-oriented.

Therapy heals mental and emotional infirmities, while coaching helps healthy individuals achieve more or reach important goals.

Personal coaches work with clients on a wide range of issues, such as coping with a problem or crisis, focusing their efforts on achievement, making career transitions, living more fulfilled lives, achieving life goals and building better relationships.

Other coaches assist people with business development or managerial or leadership development. These coaches are called business coaches or executive coaches.

While coaching is not always based on psychology, it often is. And many of the skills a coach uses are the skills in which therapists are trained. So, there is considerable overlap between coaching and therapy.

This is why many psychologists, counselors and therapists have found coaching attractive and transitioned into coaching either entirely or as a part of their practice mix. I am one of them.

In many ways, therapists have an ideal background to be coaches. But the differences between coaching and therapy are significant and important to keep in mind.

Therapists can make great coaches because of their insights into human motivation and behavior, their understanding of human development and life transitions, their communication and relationship skill and their sense of professional ethics, knowledge base and experience in helping people.

Live Workshops, Retreats, Trainings

Presenting live events such as seminars, workshops, retreats and training programs can be a very lucrative stream of income.

And, it can be a powerful way to affect peoples’ lives.

The group setting allows learners to engage with your material and benefit from the collective knowledge and experience of the group.

Live programs can also be an introduction to your other services. Brief programs, such as a “lunch and learn,” can be delivered for free as a solid marketing vehicle for your practice.

As a therapist, if you have developed and packaged your message into a program as recommended earlier, you have the makings of a great seminar or workshop.

Why not kill two birds with one stone?

Promoting a workshop or retreat is promoting your practice at the same time — and may be psychologically easier to do.

Consider adding a post-training element to your program. It could be a follow-up mini-workshop, a series of workshops or one-on-one work.

You can leverage the energy of a live event in many ways for additional revenue streams.

And, it is likely that some participants will choose to work with you after the event is over.

You will want to casually present your other offerings at the event. You may make it easier for them by having a sign-up sheet.

Teleseminars

A teleseminar (also called a teleclass) is a seminar held over the telephone, like a conference call.

The advantage of a teleseminar is the convenience. No one has to commute and the consumers dial to a bridge line at the specified time. No physical accommodations need be arranged; you only need to rent a telephone bridgeline.

Teleseminars can include people from all over the country, even internationally, at the same time.

Classes are typically 60 minutes long, but can vary. Often teleseminars are offered in a multi-class series.

Teleseminars are another way to offer your packaged content and introduce people to your services. Teleseminars can be offered for free to attract prospective clients and let them sample your services.

See www.TeleClass.com for examples of what various professionals are offering. Or, do a search on Google for teleseminars or teleclasses. There are hundreds to browse and attend.

To get a better feel for how to conduct a teleseminar, attend some yourself.

Consulting

The goal of this book is to help mental health practitioners build thriving managed-care free private practices.

One of the themes I hope I have conveyed is that psychology is not just for DSM diagnoses.

While we have discussed ways to market traditional services, diversification is important, as it increases the chances we can generate sufficient income to operate outside of managed care.

Multiple streams of psychotherapy income can be developed in one’s practice.

When I decided to build a manage-care free practice, I gave considerable thought to how

I could provide private-pay services. I explored how I could use my skills in ways that people would readily pay.

Many psychologists and other mental health professionals are successful in consulting in the workplace for the benefit of employees and employers. Business consulting can be a very lucrative income stream.

Like many practitioners, I found my skills could be applied in the business arena. Today, through a business I started called Leadership Concepts, I offer services in the areas of business consulting, executive, business and career coaching and seminars and workshops for businesses. This has proven to be a solid and growing income stream for me, and it is work I really enjoy.

Other ways to diversify into consulting include behavioral medicine, forensics and sports psychology.

Consulting is a very broad and diverse area, so I won’t scrape the surface of the possibilities here. But perhaps I can give you good directions for exploration.

If this area is new for you, you will be surprised to find out the many valuable ways our psychology and mental health expertise can be of benefit to people in the workplace.

Our background makes us capable of assisting businesses with many different barriers to productivity.

To familiarize yourself with this terrain, I suggest you do a Google search using the keywords “business,” “consulting” and “psychologist” and browse the web sites that come up.

Forensic Consulting

Another specific type of consulting is worth considering separately.

Forensic consulting has to do with psychological or mental health service specifically related to the court system.

Often times, a court has to deal with issues that impinge on mental health issues.

Some of these include:

Criminal cases

• Competency to stand trial

• Mental status at time of offense

• Mitigating factors in offenses

• Risk assessments, violence

Civil cases

• Emotional damages in personal injuries

• Assessments for malingering

Family cases and other

• Child custody evaluations

• Court-ordered psychological evaluations

In addition, attorneys often need help sorting out the issues when questions of a psychological nature occur in their cases. They retain psychologists and other experts to review files and help them prepare for depositions or cross-examination of experts.

Psychologists and other professionals can inform the court on issues, perform assessments and testify as experts.

Consultants in this area testifying as experts typically receive $1,000 to $2,000 for their testimony.

I find that this niche is an attractive one for several reasons:

• It is completely managed-care free

• It is interesting work

• It makes good use of our background

• It is lucrative

• It is a specialized area that many professionals find intimidating,

which means less competition.

If you find this an interesting prospect as a part of your practice, then I encourage you to begin taking some training workshops to familiarize yourself with the terrain.

Web sites

Revenue streams can be active or passive. Therapy sessions, therapy groups, workshops and consulting services are all active forms of revenue streams. You exchange your time and skills for a fee.

Passive revenue is revenue from streams that do not involve service delivery, but once set up, occur automatically 24/7. A common form of passive revenue is income from products sold on a web site.

Can you see the advantages of passive revenue? Can therapists develop passive revenue streams? You bet!

Therapists can productize their most useful expertise and offer information products to benefit others.

Some of these we already looked at, like books, e-books and e-courses. These can all be offered on a web site for web seekers to obtain and utilize to fill their needs.

There are other possibilities as well, such as licensing programs.

As an example of a passive revenue web site effectively offering information products to a specific niche, see TeachMeTeamwork.com.

Passive income streams utilizing the internet via web sites are a burgeoning area for many service professionals, but few mental health professionals are taking advantage of the potential so far.

This will be changing soon.

Active income streams can also be marketed on the internet.

Web sites can also be effectively used as a marketing tool for your fee-for-service practice. More and more therapists are putting up web sites and for good reasons.

A web site is your practice brochure, available any time, day or night, to seekers on the internet. People you meet, people who hear you give a presentation and people referred to you by another professional, can be directed to view your web site, find out more about you and, hopefully, be stimulated to contact you.

A simple, attractive, intriguing postcard sent to a mailing list can direct your niche market to your web site. Or, your yellow page ad in the phone book can include your web address.

A web site is much more than a brochure. It is also a potentially powerful marketing vehicle, when combined with internet marketing strategies.

If you decide to have a web site for your practice, or for a particular niche service, make it full of resources (articles and free information) that will attract people to it and make them want to spread the word.

Although beyond the scope of this article, internet marketing strategies can be developed to drive people to your web site.

Increasingly, people are beginning their search for products and services on the internet.

The yellow pages are not the first choice for many.

Are you effectively represented on the Internet?

Licensing Programs

After you have developed effective structured programs for your niches, you can license the use of these programs to other professionals.

Other therapists have been doing this for years. Psychologist Dr. Daniel Dana, a conflict resolution specialist, certifies mediators and licenses his program at MediationWorks.com.

Another example can be found at DifficultChild.com, as we mentioned previously. Howard Glasser, M.A. offers a parenting approach and program, as well as other materials, for ADHD children. His program involves a book, a training program for parents and a training and certification program for therapists.

His program is called “Transforming the Difficult Child: The Nurtured Heart Approach.”

One of my coaching clients is certified in this program and speaks highly of it.

Howard Glasser’s web site actually models several streams of income, including a book, workshops, training other professionals, licensing or certification and internet marketing for all the above including his practice.

These “programs in a box” are typically complete turnkey therapy, counseling or consulting programs that therapists can purchase. They are usually complete, including the structured program itself, instructor materials, workbooks and also include marketing pieces you can use to generate business.

For those of you who want to do niche marketing but prefer not to do the creating part, you may want to find out whether someone has developed a program you can utilize to serve your niche.

Someone may have done the work for you.

If you can find a program suitable for your niche market, you could be a few days away from having a marketable service in your repertoire.

Training Other Professionals

When you have developed an effective program, you can leverage it by training others in your approach and methods.

Innovators in therapy have been training others for years. If you develop a specialization, program or niche service in a growing area, you may find many other therapists would like to learn from you.

Sometimes the innovation is mainly in how a service is packaged.

You can train other professionals via live workshops, self-study program packages and teleseminars.

Diversification by developing a number of streams of psychotherapy income increases the chances you can create sustainable income and can be rewarding in other ways too.

Everyone needs a little help now and then. It may be in the form of a doctor treating an illness or a mental professional helping out with a psychological problem that has manifested itself. No one can go through life alone. If you find that you are not growing personally or professionally, then you may need to employ the services of a life coach to help you break free from your hang-ups and help you become more motivated and at a better place in your life.

One profession that is gaining in popularity is that of a life coach. Life coaching is a profession dedicated to helping people gain the necessary skills they need to obtain a goal. It is not a career field for everyone though. It takes a special person to be a mentor to someone else.

Far too many people hire a life coach expecting the man or the woman to do all of the work for them. The individual wants something for his or her life and expects the mentor to get that for them.

Effective coaching skills are ignored and the person continues with an “I want” attitude that is neither productive nor effective. The mentor’s job is to help, not to do all of the work and push the individual towards the goal.

If you need leadership mentoring for a job, or you have simply found yourself in need of skills to help you overcome a life issue, then you may need the help of someone capable of life coaching. But go into the coaching relationship with reasonable expectations. You cannot expect miracles.

The coach is there to help you with life tips, not provide you with all of the answers. Most of the problems in your life you will have to work out for yourself but he or she can be there to lend a helping hand and a shoulder to rest on.

Coaching people is not limited to just the job or your personal life. There are life coaches for dating as well. Should you find yourself striking out in the dating game, employing someone to help you may be a great idea. Consider dating coaches as your own personal cheer box that shouts out encouragements and gives you dating advice.

Everyone needs a little help to overcome some of their problems every once in a while. You will be able to get that help from your life coach. Sure, they cannot solve your problems for you but they can provide you with the motivation you need to solve the problem yourself.

Find the help you need to change your life and you will be taking a positive step in the right direction. Even when things seem to be the hardest, you are still learning valuable, life building lessons to help you on your way.

How To Care For Men’s Dress Shirts?
by: Janine Giorgenti

Knowing the Proper care for your dress shirts is essential in keeping your shirts crisp and in good condition, while projecting a well-groomed appearance.

Many men ask “how do I clean and take care of my custom shirts”

Tips on how to care and extend the life of your dress shirts:

Wash your brand new custom dress shirt before wearing to, remove any toxic chemicals and to make the material softer.

To avoid embarrassing moments and the nuisance of loosing a button. Routinely check your custom shirt to see if the buttons are secure, or if there are any loose threads.

To preserve the fabric and color, machine wash your custom dress shirts using a gentle cycle with luke-warm water.

Do not dry-clean your shirts! The chemicals in dry cleaning fluid will destroy the fabric or even turn your custom shirts yellow. Instead, request that your shirts be laundered.

Starching while pressing causes cotton fibers in custom dress shirts to weaken. To keep a crisp look, buy a custom shirt with a high thread count.

To avoid antiperspirant stains, spray your deodorant or cologne on your body and wait for it to dry before wearing the dress shirt.

To prevent permanent staining, promptly wash your custom dress shirt before the stain sets and is absorbed in the fabric.

To avoid lifting the color out of your shirts or “color runs”, separate your shirts before laundering into three categories. whites, colors and darks. To get your white shirts whiter, use bleach like Clorox. For colors, use a diluted solution or special bleach for colors. As for your dark colored shirts, avoid bleaching all together.

Check for stains and clean before pressing. Heat from an iron will permanently set the stain into the fabric.

Unless you have a great steam iron, it’s best to iron your custom dress shirts while the fabric is damp, so you do not scorch or damage the fabric. It will also make it easier to get out all the wrinkles.

Tips for Ironing your custom dress shirts:

Collar – To iron the collar, starting from its underside. Iron away from the collar points toward the back of the neck area. Then turn the shirt over and iron the same way for the front of the collar.

Yoke – Iron the yoke area starting from the neck outwards to the center of the shirt. If there are pleats at the yoke, iron the pleats flat in the direction of the fold.

Cuff – Similar to the collars, iron the cuffs inside out. Always remember to lay the sleeves flat and start from the cuff upward, then iron the other side as well.

Shirt body – Iron the torso starting from the shoulders down to the shirt ends. Do it step by step starting from the right torso panel then to the left panel. This will keep each side equally well-ironed. Remember to iron in-between the buttons as well with the iron tip.

Hanging your Custom shirts:

To keep your custom dress shirts in a nice shape, use wooden or plastic hangers with firm shoulders. Wire hangers will destroy the shape of your custom shirts

Homage to Luciano Pavarotti: A Deafening Silence
by: Susan Dunn, MA

Can you hear the silence? Luciano Pavarotti has been forced to cancel his performances for rest of this year because of the removal of a malignant pancreatic mass.

He has impressed his doctors with his physical and emotional resilience, and plans to resume in 2007. At the age of 70, he has been singing for us for over 40 years.

The silence of the media has also been deafening. The news has been spread mostly by word-of-mouth. Club Vivo Per Lei members email me daily – “I have just learned the news.”

Like the blogger who wrote, “He has been the soundtrack for much of my life,” Pavarotti is so much a part of my life, I knew almost nothing about him. He rarely grants interviews. Ah well, if one can sing, why talk?

By all reports, he isn’t a complicated man. Italian to the core, he appreciates food, women, song, family, home, and the place where he grew up. And his fans. These are the things of which he speaks.

“I can tell you which aria the audience like,” he says. “Nessun Dorma.”

I looked for his opinions about the grand themes of opera – the agony and the ecstasy – but like his fellow Italian, Verdi, he seems to distill life to its essence and keep it close to home. “For me, music making is the most joyful activity possible,” he says, “the most perfect expression of any emotion.” (See more quotes here: www.susandunn.cc/pavarottiquotes.htm )

This from a man whose voice can reach inside you, wring you inside out, and leave you weak and weeping, not knowing if its suffering or bliss; like life, the licking of honey off a thorn.

He speaks of his voice as something separate … his instrument.

“You don’t need any brains to listen to music,” he says. He has brought more people into the world of opera than anyone in history, except perhaps Verdi. As he so graciously puts it, “I might just have introduced some people to this music!”

To read about opera, he says, is like making love by mail. I followed this prescription in my own learning process. Tossing aside the worthless college textbook on opera a friend lent me, I bought CDs and attended operas.

Already familiar with Pavarotti, I’d been exploring lately — Wunderlich, Caruso, Gedda, Bjorling; like most women, I prefer the tenors. And then the news about Pavarotti took me back home. My sister had emailed me, “That man has given me more hours of bliss than any person on earth.” The King of High Cs. In La Fille du Regiment at the Met, in 1972, he sang 9 effortless high Cs, sending the audience wild. He also holds the Guiness record for most curtain calls – 165.

“To understand his success,” writes his wife of 35 years, Adua, “and what it is about his voice that stops people in their tracks Ŕ we must go back to his origins.

Luciano Pavarotti was born in Modena, Italy, October 12, 1935, an only child. His father, Fernando, sang tenor well until 2 weeks before his death, at 90, and Luciano plans to do the same. Modena is in a region of Italy that produces strong, broad-chested men such as can sing opera, and Luciano’s extraverted and optimistic temperament made him well-suited for the rigors of the operatic lifestyle.

He was taken to his first opera at the age of 12, but his singing career began much earlier. “At the age of 4,” he says, “I jump on the table. I am a little tenor. And I begin to sing, La Donna e Mobile.”

One of the 25 most-recognized people in the world, he was the first opera star to really make use of the media. Almost his entire career is recorded. His concert in Central Park in June of ’93 was attended by 500,000, with millions more watching on TV. However, he says, “Above all, I am an opera singer. This is how people will remember me.”

We know he has a voice the likes of which we will not hear again in our lifetimes, so what, really can the critics tell us? But with typical garbo, Pavarotti says, “People have a right to criticize. If they boo me because I sing bad, they will do it.”

However, it is the voices of we the people that speak what he has meant to us:

• Una maravilla de Reconditat Armonia

• Vamos Luciano! Eres fuerte y te recuperaras de tu endermedad. Ritorna vincitor!

• Oooooo…Goosebumps!

• Caro Maestro Luciano sei stato Grande.

• This man will always live in my heart. Such an amazingly beautiful instrument.

• Mio Dio!

• Pavarotto! Ecce il uomo.

• The last “vincero” was god’s own voice.

• Ay, Dios mio.

• Je veux morire. (I want to die)

• When he was in his prime, his voice was the most thrilling in the history of recorded sound.

• Thank you, Pav!

The resilience? The attitude? When interviewed about his retirement by bbc in 2005, Jeremy Paxman kept pumping for something that simply isn’t there. Like what was the worst thing that had ever happened to him “during that time.” “Which time?” Pavarotti asks.

The nightmares, Paxman wants to know about.

“It was a constant pleasure,” Pavarotti replies.

“Even when things go wrong?” asks Paxman?

“Yes, so what” replies Pavarotti. “I am a very optimistic human being in one sense, yes, but I like the truth.”

The Italians, of course, are never too direct about things, that concept they call “garbo.” It means “polite,” “kind,” “kindness,” or “graciousness,” but, a synecdoche in itself, in the Venetian dialect it means “curt,” or “abrupt.” In includes a heady fusion of fact and fiction, which may be a secret to resilience, and feeds the fantasy the rest of the world has that Italians are somehow enjoying more (and suffering more) than the rest of us. And to this blend of realistic illusion, or fantasized reality, you would say “it can’t be that complicated,” and an Italian would say, “it isn’t that simple.”

Still after the goat, Paxman pursues, “Some people say you should have retired some time ago.” Pavarotti replies, “Well, some people are probably right!”

Besides, we all know he won’t retire. It is hard for a young man in Italy, because the men work forever. Pavarotti’s father was singing at 90, and Pavarotti plans the same.

Does he read music, Paxman wants to know. His reply is incomprehensible, and truly why would we care? He sings it. Who cares if he reads it?

The indefatigable Paxman tries one last time: “But will you be glad to stop performing?”

“No,” he replies.

“Will you miss it?”

“No.”

He then mentions the “beautiful companies” he has – family, friends, students, and adds, “I am not missing it already. This was, of course, before the Farewell Tour of 2006.

It is just as typical that Pavarotti has expressed no acrimony in response to his former manager’s book, THE KING & I.: The Uncensored Tale of Luciano Pavarotti’s Rise to Fame by His Manager, Friend and Sometime Adversary (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0385509723/susandunnmome-20. He in fact expresses is gratitude.

“I never got to see him at the Met,” my sister writes me. Well, I will take her to see Pavarotti at the Met, when he returns in 2007. I’m part Italian, you know. I don’t know his schedule, or if he will be able to sing, or how well, but we will not go to hear him, we will go to pay him homage, and to thank him for the memories. And if that concept remains a fantasy, well you don’t need to be able to read music in order to sing.

In closing, I may have, unfaithfully, listened to other tenors, but Pavarotti was my Christmas for many years. An often exhausted working single mother, I would choose one special night. After I had put the boys to bed, I would turn on the Christmas tree lights. No dishes, no laundry that night. I would slip the Christmas video into the VCR, climb into my recliner in front of the big screen TV with slippers and hot toddy, and the tears would start streaming down my face.

Grazie, mille, Luciano Pavarotti. Please get well soon.

If you can bear to, watch him singing Nessun Dorma at Torino in 2006. It is, indeed, the aria the audience like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwlE_qNSWLw .

Have a great day!

The Emotional Roller Coaster:

Gary really knows how to punish himself. I sit in amazement day after day as I watch him wage war on himself. Sure, sometimes he is yelling at his girlfriend, or the guy at work who he feels isn’t giving him the respect he deserves, but mostly he isn’t fighting them so much as he is simply just driven to continuously stir headache in his own life. Why does he do this? Why is it that Gary seems to crave drama in his life?

A few days prior to me writing this, Gary and Melinda had a fight. I know because I was there as it happened. I live next door to Gary. It’s the exact same thing as you hear it on daytime TV talk shows. Melinda is on prescription medication for being bipolar. She skips out on taking her meds, goes crazy, and bingo bango they are fighting. She physically attacks him. He pushes her away a little too forcefully and she trips. One of her girlfriends calls the cops, and next thing you know, Gary is in handcuffs. The high point of this stupidity is when she later says, “but I love him.” This reoccurs every few months or so. Now, you would think that Gary would wise up, get a restraining order, and find a “normal” girl, but no, he doesn’t. Not more than 24 hours after the police have left, he tells me that his apartment is just so quiet without her. He misses her. He is just as crazy as her to say something like this! He would rather have a clinically crazy girl occasionally attacking him than a quiet apartment.

I’m sure you know people who behave like this. Maybe they habitually use drugs to get as high as the moon and then suffer though the hangover after. Maybe they are in a bad relationship like Gary and Melinda. Maybe even you have something repetitive that you do that takes you through emotional highs and lows for no logical reason. It’s time for you to finally understand what’s built into every human that compels us to behave in this way.

All that I teach is rooted in the science of evolution. If you want to understand why people behave the way they do, evolutionary psychology will give you the answer. Your brain and how it functions is the product of evolution. Evolution is not a fast process. The “software” that is running in your head is about 40,000 years out of date. So you are living in today’s world, but your head is wired for the world of 40,000 years ago. This mismatch is the number one cause of all the b
1000
ad decisions that people make today.

40,000 years ago, life was much more difficult. If you were alive back then all you thought about was hunting/gathering food, trying to not become dinner for some other animal, and if you were lucky, reproduce before dying at a very young age. Life was very, very stressful. It was programmed into you that survival and huge emotional swings went hand in hand. The reason we developed this over 40,000 years ago was because it was an advantage to us. Your ancestors craved situations like this because it was to their benefit. There were two options back then:

OPTION ONE: Cower in the back of a cave too scared to leave to gather food and hunt. They sit there until they get so weak that they either just die or the first fierce animal that finds them has no problem making dinner out of them. – This group dies out quickly.

OPTION TWO: Be a prehistoric adrenaline junkie. They leave the safety of their cave and risk death as they hunt and fight off animals that are hunting them. We are all decedents of prehistoric adrenaline junkies because they were the ones who survived at least long enough to have children. Our brains are wired for desiring huge emotional swings because 40,000 years ago it increased our chances of survival and replication.

As life changed for us over the years and got easier, we came up with new ways to satisfy that evolutionary need for highly charged emotional swings. We replaced hunting tribes with sports teams. We replaced quests for conquest with movies. We replaced inter-tribal rivalry with day time TV soap operas. Our brains are wired for drama and that is why we create it in today’s world.

Are we doomed to create senseless drama in our lives to satisfy some outdated evolutionary need? Thankfully, no. We can use the logical part of our brains to actually use this to our advantage.

So how do we do this? Step one is to understand why this exists in you, as you do now. The second step is to choose the emotional roller coaster you are going to ride and do it wisely.

Stop watching TV habitually. Stop drinking and doing drugs habitually. And if Gary happens to read this, stop getting into relationships with women who are clinically insane.

Like our ancestors, get your fix of emotional highs and lows from things that make your life better via participation.

One hour of strenuous exercise a day will do the trick. GO TO THE GYM! When those endorphins start to kick in (once you make habit of working out every day) you will feel great after your workout. As a side note, you’ll hurt like hell when you push it and that will provide the emotional low. If this isn’t enough for you, start kickboxing. Beating the hell out of people and having the crap kicked out of you a few days a week will definitely do the trick.

What's the beneft of having a life coach?

Some lady in the internet told me that she really thought that I need a life coach… Will it really help me in my overburdened life? and by the way, what usually the life coach does? life is crazy sometimes…

When your marriage ends feeling grief is a natural part of the loss of the family structure and the significant relationship, whether the decision was mutual, or thrust upon you—both parties suffer.

Grief has various stages and the intense emotions that occur can make it difficult to make the many decisions that are required.

In my role as a Life Coach, I rely on both my professional knowledge and personal experience—proffering different options and alternatives for the resolution of issues— to help couples communicate and negotiate effectively—financial, emotional, dividing tangible possessions and co-parenting.

However, we know that emotions can impair the ability to make informed decisions. This is the reason that I also help divorcing people understand and manage the grief process. Grief is relevant in divorce because everyone is vulnerable to it during and after experiencing a major loss.

Many enter the divorce settlement negotiation in the early stages of grief and vacillate between denial and feelings of sadness, anger and wanting to retaliate. Others readily enter into the acceptance stage; they have made peace with the loss of their marriage and are ready to build a new life—therefore sadness, grief, anger and retaliation are absent. Others systematically diminish the uncomfortable feelings attendant to grief through using alcohol, drugs, work, sex and other self-medication. Some diminish the uncomfortable feelings with sleeping pills and/or antidepressants.

Children are impacted by their own grief and by their parents’ grief, especially when parents struggle to make informed decisions regarding their children due to theirs and their children’s grief—thus everyone experiences a double dose.

As a relationship coach—or in this case a relationship dissolution coach, I help couples understand and manage their sadness, anger and grief so as to lessen its effects on informed decision-making. For example: “I can see how angry you are and in my experience that is very common and normal.” This acknowledgement diminishes the intense feelings and enhances their informed decision making.

For those who are recurrently angry, sad and/or seeking retaliation, I continually empathically acknowledge and normalize their grief, anger, sadness or desire to seek retaliation. For those who are self-medicating or visibly stuck in depression, I encourage additional support—such as accountants, financial planners, lawyers and real estate professionals.

No matter their stage of grief most divorcing people are likely to progress toward acceptance when their grief, sadness, anger and retaliation feelings are recognized and acknowledged.

Most divorcing people are also likely to benefit from the increased trust they feel when I empathically recognize their grief, anger, sadness and desire for retaliation.

Children also benefit from recognition of their feelings and this helps parents advance towards acceptance. As parents move past the early and frequently volatile stages of grief, anger and sadness, and make decisions in the best interest of their children, then the children progress more readily through their grief, sadness and anger.

For many there seems to be an unidentified calling to add value to other peoples lives, for many there seems to be a drive to make the world a better place. They seem to be the first person someone calls when they might be experiencing certain challenges in their life. They are the go to person during a break up or when the going gets tough. For some reason the things they say make an impact on their friends and family that shifts their life in a new direction. They don not understand why or how, they seem to have that gift. These are the ideal people to become a life coach.

Via the learning process coaches in training will discover, implement and practice utilizing the tools to move people through change. They might be using many of these tools already in their own life not knowing how they are identified or where they can be applied in other areas. It is like a talented athlete that even though they shine with their exceptional talent they can only see their own perspective of the game, while the coach seeing from a dissociated outside perspective can see and share ideas with them on where they can improve and continue to fine tune to excellence.

One critical important part of attending an accredited school is that in most cases they offer beginning and advanced business training. This perhaps is one of the most important aspect of any life coach certification course. While they might have natural skills in coaching that does not mean they will succeed in the world of business. This is where it is critically important to find a mentor. Someone that has done what you are looking to achieve, if you do not know any one, call everyone you know and ask if they can help you find one. Leverage your network.

Personal life coaching is a very rewarding career when applied with the intention of helping and supporting others to plan and achieve their goals. While there are many different niches to choose from, ranging from executive coaching, business coaching, spiritual coaching at the end of the day all coaching is personal coaching. If someone is not reaching their goals it is due to their limiting beliefs about themselves or abilities. As a life coach you will work with these people to discover what they are and vanquish them once and for all.

Orlando Piedrahita writes articles about the importance of a life coach certification and the value of personal life coaching

Accelerated Learning

Having been a self-development trainer for many years I have come to the conclusion that when looking at the many life skills that humans need to master in order to mould for themselves a joyous, fulfilling and creative life, accelerated learning skills are probably the most important of all. Not only do these skills make a huge difference to the individual, they also have a massive impact on the corporate sector. The annual figure spent on corporate training is colossal and yet without the implementation of these foundation skills it is apparent that the vast majority of this money, representing thousands of pounds, is being totally wasted.

As opposed to the ‘one career’ life typical of yesteryear, in today’s age most people are being required to make several changes during their working life. It is predicted by Charles Handy, Professor of Economics, that in the generation to come it will not be unusual for someone to have between 5 and 7 completely separate careers. This means that not only must we be adept at change, but also comfortable and confident amongst this constant bombardment of new information and demand for learning. It is already the case that ‘intellectually’ talented people demand higher salaries than those that are ‘physically’ advantaged, and this will be increasingly so in the work environment that is developing.

In this ever-changing world with its fast pace, uncertainty and job insecurity, the only thing that is certain is uncertainty itself. In almost all occupations knowledge is doubling every 2-3 years meaning that someone who is fully qualified in the year 1999 might find their qualifications woefully inadequate by the year 2002.

As the economy in the world shifts, people who are appropriately educated will tend to do best and the premium that society will pay for such skills will climb. ‘Appropriate’ education will be increasingly biased towards the incorporation of accelerated learning techniques, which will provide the core skills necessary to succeed and grow in the years to come. It is important that you look upon life as a lifelong adventure, and appreciate that the future belongs to those who are prepared to change and learn, and that to stand still is really to go backwards

The most important aspect of learning is being proficient in how to learn. Once you can master this ability, no new
1000
project, language or situation will again overwhelm you. And once you possess the basic techniques then, like riding a bicycle, they will be with you forever, meaning ‘the world is your oyster’.

To increase your effectiveness in studying in this new age of information overload must you just push yourself harder? Fortunately, the answer is NO. Rising stress levels caused by the need to acquire boundless information forced a study of this issue and a search for solutions. The result was the set of principles developed by academics and known internationally as ‘accelerated learning’. This uses some of the recent advances in cognitive science and offers an exciting new prospective on harnessing the whole brain’s phenomenal capabilities. Accelerated learning offers ways to unlock an amazing array of cognitive skills.

• Exponentially increased abilities for gathering, storing, comprehending, synthesising, sorting, implementing and retaining new-found knowledge.
• Improved concentration and efficiency for stress-free learning.
• Better strategic, critical and creative thinking.

Paradoxically, the strategy to access your huge hidden capabilities is not simply to push yourself harder but to work much more closely with your own hidden mind. Since these concepts are different from most traditional approaches to learning accelerated learning has developed avenues to greatly facilitate whole and direct brain function. Accelerated learning improves our approach to study through learning, research and theory and the laws governing the functioning of the brain. And uses techniques that tap into your brain’s amazing and awesome capabilities.

But before considering entering upon the study of accelerated learning skills you should assess yourself – do you possess the two fundamental characteristics necessary without which you cannot even begin to develop yourself to your greatest potential?

1. A genuine desire to want to learn, and
2. A strong seated belief in your ability to learn.

Without fulfilling these basic criteria all the techniques and skills in the world will be of no use whatsoever and you will never fully develop.

So, what are Accelerated Learning Techniques? They are seven pillars, which combine to effectively provide a profoundly efficient and stress-free method of learning. These are:-

• Understanding the power of the mind and how it works
• Recognising the nine intelligence ‘types’ and identifying your own
• Using mind maps
• Using music
• Developing effective memory techniques
• Knowing how to study and learn

POWER OF THE MIND. Amazing as it sounds, it is only in the last 150 years that scientists have pinpointed where our brain is, and the last 15-18 years that they have begun to have a proper understanding of how it functions. Dr David Samuels of the Weizmamn Institute estimated that underlying the brain’s basic range of activities up to 1 million chemical reactions take place every minute. There is a minimum of 1,000,000,000,000 (one million million) individual neurons or nerve cells. This figure becomes even more amazing when you realise that each of your neurons can interact with up to 100,000 other neurons in many ways at any one time. In fact, it has recently been estimated that the number of permutations may be 1 followed by 800 zeros. A number too enormous to think about. There really are no limitations whatsoever to the power of your brain. It is limitless.

INTELLIGENCE is not fixed but is a set of abilities and skills applied in a given context. A person can excel in one situation, displaying impressive intelligence and yet appear at a complete loss in another situation. Evaluated at its most basic level intelligence could be described as the ability to Learn – Retain – Recall – Apply. However, studied more closely, Professor Howard Gardner came up with the theory of multiple intelligences and it is now widely
1000
accepted that there are nine different ‘types’ of intelligence –

• linguistic/language
• mathematical/logical
• musical
• physical
• inter-personal
• intra-personal
• visio-spacial
• naturist
• spiritual.

Unfortunately, the educational system of today is derived from the 1830’s Prussian system, which addresses and values only two of these intelligence types – linguistic/language and mathematical/logical – and sadly fails those who fall into one of the many other categories. By identifying your own natural type of intelligence you are able to develop it to its full potential. Beyond this, it is also possible to learn how to consciously exploit your full range of intelligences; a technique that ensures balanced learning, and the ability to think in new and different ways.

MIND MAPPING is one of the fundamental keystones to accelerated learning. It is an invaluable device developed by Tony Buzan for learning, retaining, recalling and applying information, which is designed to use the whole brain. It will strengthen or develop your strategic thinking and problem-solving skills. Indeed, mind mapping is such a powerful tool that it can revolutionise your complete approach to work and life, allowing you to adapt a more dynamic, proactive approach to life and enhance your creativity. Mind mapping breaks away from the traditional method of ‘linear learning’ (eg writing in lines) and uses patterns that work more efficiently with your ‘multi-dimensional’ brain. If one had to choose just one of the accelerated learning skills it is mind-mapping that would have the most profound effect upon ones life.

LISTENING TO MUSIC that you enjoy is an uplifting experience, harmonising body and soul. However, used properly it is also an invaluable tool for effortlessly easing new information into your long-term memory. Music can mimic the brain’s wavelength when it is in the receptive state for learning. The left half of the brain relates to the music’s rhythm and sounds and the right side identifies with the textures of each sound. Therefore, learning new words or information against a set musical pattern unites left brain activity (words) and right brain activity (music). For example, Bulgarian educator, Dr Georgi Lozanov, in his pioneering work with accelerated learning techniques carried out extensive studies that demonstrated how Baroque music’s steady tempo of 60 beats per minute parallels the brains wavelength when in a state of relaxed alertness, called Alpha, and is conducive to learning and retention.

SPEED READING is a technique which is governed by understanding how the eye interacts with the brain, recognising memory rhythms and adapting your reading speed for different reading matter. The average person reads at the rate of 240 words per minute, and yet, it is quite possible to obtain the skill of reading up to 2000 or more words per minute. The problems typically experienced by people include lack of concentration, poor recall, unsatisfactory level of understanding, limited attention span and the inability to deal with distractions. Many of these problems are routed in the traditional method of reading you were taught as a child. By re-adjusting this method most of these problems are eliminated and you can become not only a faster reader but a better one.

MEMORY. The belief that memory worsens with age is a fallacy. In fact, the memory is like a muscle; the more it is used, the better it gets. And vice versa. So it is important to learn how to utilise your natural learning style to ease memory recall. According to the 80/20 rule which is taken from Perato’s Law (Alfredo Perato, Italy, 1895) the average person loses 80% of what is learnt within 24 hours, because it is not learned correctly. By learning the differing techniques and systems available to improve memory skills, you can ensure that facts learned are locked into long term memory.

HOW TO LEARN AND STUDY. Preparation is vital to any ta
de7
sk. To enable effective learning to take place painlessly you must first prepare the mind. Accelerated learning techniques will show you how to gather information, without overload, sifting important information from the superfluous. The unique M.A.S.T.E.R. system will effectively enable you to fearlessly approach all future learning.
• M – Prepare the mind for learning
• A – Acquire the information
• S – Search out the meaning
• T – Trigger the memory
• E – Exhibit what you know
• R – Reflect on how you learned

An increasing number of companies are feeling the economic strain of providing necessary training, and are realising that much of the money invested in this vital area is not justified by the subsequent results. Returning to people who have attended courses after periods of one, three and six months, it is devastatingly apparent that very little of the course learning has been retained, and even less implemented. If 80% of learning is so rapidly lost it means that effectively 80% of the training budget is wasted. Therefore, it is essential that the basic skills of learning be absorbed first so that subsequent training is worthwhile. People need to have an understanding of how the brain works so that they can use it in the most effective way, and once they have established the skills incorporated within accelerated learning techniques they will find their life very much enhanced. Not only will it help them in their work but many other aspects of their life.

You may well have watched ‘The Cowboy Trap’ a TV programme identifying the antics of Cowboy Builders and the upset they leave on their unsuspecting customers. How or why on earth do people let themselves be conned by these rogues? It’s easy really, these cowboys might not be too good at building but they’re experts in the art of cons. However, don’t be fooled into think it’s only the building trade where this type of person operates; if there’s a con to be had they’ll be there waiting for unsuspecting customers to turn up and as sure as night follows day they turn up. Any trade, practice or service area that is a demand and the guidelines on the management of the professionals is a little woolly makes prime breeding ground for the cowboys.

Life Coaching is no exception to this practice, although the visual and tangible effects to the customers are not always apparent to the observer, except of course in their bank balance.

Life Coaches work with clients through questioning and the responses they give, which are directly as a result of their thoughts and emotions at the time of the session. For a very clever ‘conman’ it won’t be long before he has ‘conditioned’ his unsuspecting client into all sorts of promises and extra coaching sessions. Conditioning is a process used by prisoners on prison staff and paedophiles with young children to get their own way. This, however, is the more serious case; it won’t always necessarily be done maliciously. There are times when it will be done unsuspectingly by both the coach and client, in particular when the coach doesn’t possess the necessary skills.

Situations where the coach may not have the necessary skills can be brought about in two different ways:

A person decides to start coaching people because they feel they have the skills and it seems like a good way to make money

A person decides the want to become a coach and they follow a trainee coaching programme, however the programme is of a poor standard so the person doesn’t develop the necessary skills to an appropriate depth

The ‘knock on’ effect of both of these two scenarios is serious to both the clients welfare and the reputation of the life coaching industry. It is time for the Life Coaching industry to become regulated, take full control and introduce a compulsory register for trained and qualified Life Coaches. By definition, the industry is one to help people so what’s happen to ‘walking the talk’ and providing clear guidelines for coaches and clients alike. Come Life Coaches it’s time to protect your industry and stop leaving it open for abuse
