Life coaching has evolved greatly over the past 10 years leaving its realm of executive and general leadership programs, to working with people who wouldn’t consider visiting a therapist otherwise. People who are seeking for a support system that will hold them accountable, provide a space to share their thoughts, ideas, concerns and find the answer to the questions that are holding them back from their own success.
Studies show that the profession of life coaching is not slowing down on the contrarily it is just now gaining momentum. If you are considering life coaching as a profession this couldn’t be a better time. Many have already paved the road to establish its credibility, its track record of success, and most importantly a mythology and proof that it’s a lucrative profession while supporting others to their own greatness.
Even while there are no requirements to get into the profession of coaching there are some unspoken and unwritten requirements that are essential before starting the training.
1. Be accepting of others for who they are.
2. Be an active listener.
3. Be willing to learn and constantly growing and see things from an external perspective.
4. Be resilient, disciplined and consistent when it comes to building a business.
5. Be naturally comfortable talking to others.
If you are looking to get into the profession simply for the money then it’s not for you. However if you are genuinely interested in finding out how to contribute in someone’s life, in making an impact on their success and believe firmly in your ability to connect with others, then you will exceed. Experience in sales, marketing and public speaking is a big bonus it will cut your learning time almost in half when it comes time to build a business.
The International Coaching Federation is the largest non for profit organization that defines the philosophies of coaching and also provides ethical standard practices across the coaching community. Anyone could print business cards and call themselves a coach, however with the creation of a foundation standard and practices that allow it to function and be recognized by regulatory body and more importantly adds a deep level of credibility for the coaching industry.
When looking into becoming a certified life coach make sure it is accredited by the International Coaching Federation, they provide business building philosophies, communities of practice and qualified trainers that have built their own practice as well. Stay away from home study guides that promise you to be certified in just 30 days. You wouldn’t trust your education to just any college then why do the same with coaching. Wouldn’t you want to have the most effective tools, practice and strategies to offer your clients?

What's the difference between counselling and coaching?
I think the main difference is that counselling deals with what has gone and coaching with what is to come. If you've had a traumatic experience counselling can help provide closure. If you generally mess up or just want to improve then coaching teaches you how to perform differently or better. What do you think?
